More than 3 million bitcoins “disappeared” forever, salvaging the $10 billion business behind Bitcoin

The first commandment to hold bitcoins — protect your private keys. What would you do if your Bitcoin “disappeared”? Some people are willing to give £7.4 million to the city government, just to get permission to excavate garbage dumps and recover computer hard drives; others find hypnotists to evoke forgotten memories through hypnotism therapy; others simply hire hackers to hack their own hardware wallets... Just as gold and silver treasures sink to the bottom of the water, bitcoins known as “digital gold” will also disappear. The “disappearance” mentioned here does not mean that they have been stolen or robbed, but rather that Bitcoin owners have lost their personal information for various reasons. But can “disappeared” bitcoins really be recovered? More than 3 million bitcoins will forever “disappear” and “I would like to give the city government £7.4 million as a thank you if I were to excavate that garbage dump”. In December 2017, James once again submitted an application to the local city government to excavate a nearby landfill. Let's start in 2009. James is an engineer at an IT company in Newport, England. By chance, he came into contact with a “new thing” like Bitcoin. As a “geek” interested in new technology, James soon began mining with his laptop. By the beginning of 2013, James had saved up more than 7,500 bitcoins. After the mining laptop broke down, he sold computer parts online and kept the computer's hard drive. Because very few people knew about Bitcoin at this time, and the price was also very low, James hoped that Bitcoin would soar in the future. But just in the summer of this year, an accident happened. While cleaning up, James accidentally threw the hard drive in the trash along with the trash. By the time he discovered the incident, the hard drive had already been buried in the landfill. James wanted to try excavating the garbage dump to find the hard drive, but the garbage dump has 350,000 tons of garbage. Finding a hard drive is like finding a needle in a haystack. Furthermore, even if found, the hard drive may have broken long ago after close contact with all kinds of garbage. More realistically, the landfill is not open to the public, the excavation may produce harmful gases, and the local government does not allow him to excavate. Four years later, in 2017, Bitcoin skyrocketed and reached an all-time high of $19,142 on December 17. James couldn't sit still any longer, and plans to excavate the garbage dump were revived in his mind, and he also raised £7.4 million for this purpose. However, as before, the municipal department's health-care workers refused his request. Just like that, James's hard drive is sleeping underground, and 7,500 bitcoins will “disappear” forever. Even today, when currency prices are sluggish, this would be a fortune worth more than 27 million dollars. Recently, the news that “the CEO of the Canadian QuadrigaCX exchange died, no one knew the key, and 150 million US dollars were locked up” attracted the attention of the cryptocurrency community and even traditional media. “Bitcoin, which claims to be absolutely safe, is embarrassing” has become a joke in many media. Bitcoin's “disappearance” is once again in front of investors. The term “disappearance” here does not mean that it has been stolen or taken, but rather that the owner of Bitcoin has lost the private key for various reasons. The first commandment to hold bitcoins — protect your private keys. If you have a private key, you have the power to control Bitcoin, and losing the private key means that these digital assets on the chain will always lie dormant on the blockchain network and will not be controlled. From its inception in 2009 until now, the price of Bitcoin has experienced drastic changes, its value has been recognized by more and more people, and more and more bitcoins have been mined. According to the data, there are about 17.5442 million bitcoins currently in circulation, but the amount of bitcoins that have been mined far exceeds this amount, because bitcoins are silent in many addresses. For various reasons, the owners of these coins are unwilling to use these coins. This includes the more than 1 million bitcoins that Satoshi has mined. And quite a few of these silent bitcoins have “disappeared.” In 2017, digital forensics company Chainalysis discovered through research on the Bitcoin blockchain that approximately 2.78 million to 3.79 million bitcoins had disappeared forever, accounting for 17% to 23% of the total number of bitcoins at the time. At the current rate of $3,894 per bitcoin, these “disappeared” bitcoins are worth more than $10 billion. Hypnotism therapy, hiring hackers just to recover Bitcoin “I won.” Mark, who had disheveled hair, raised his hands high and smiled on his tired face. Mark has spent 9 months trying various methods to recover his bitcoins. Mark is the editor of “Connect” magazine and the Future Blockchain Futures Lab (Fut...
