Stole 107 bitcoins without forgetting to remember the mnemonic words. A Chinese man was sentenced to 10 years and 9 months for the crime of theft
Comparative news. According to Knews, the Supreme Prosecution revealed a new type of virtual currency theft case on June 7. Zhang, a man from Shandong, helped his friend Feng handle virtual currency transactions for a long time. After gaining the trust of the other party, he took the initiative to suggest that Feng replace a digital wallet that is more convenient to operate. The asset mnemonic word (key) for this type of wallet is generated by the system randomly extracting 12 combinations from 2048 commonly used English words, and is the core password for storing virtual currency.
While Feng was transcribing mnemonic words, Zhang memorized 11 complete words with only his naked eye and excellent memory, and also wrote down the first letter of the last word. On the same night, they relied on repeated testing and combined cracking of fragmented memory to successfully unlock Feng's digital wallet, transfer 107 bitcoins to the other party, and subsequently illegally profiteed 660,000 yuan.
The court eventually sentenced him to 10 years and 9 months in prison and a fine of 100,000 yuan for theft.
