9-year OpenAI veteran Joshua Achiam leaves the job: AGI's mission isn't just within the lab walls

He published his farewell letter to internal Slack on X, saying that there was no specific reason for his departure, nor was it triggered by a certain point in time; it's just that after thinking for a while, he thinks he can now continue to promote the safe AGI mission outside of cutting-edge laboratories. Achiam joined OpenAI as an intern in 2017, and has been involved in AI security research for a long time since then, where he was the mission alignment team leader. In February of this year, after OpenAI disbanded the Mission Alignment team, he became chief futurist to study the impact of AGI and stronger AI on society, policy, and security. In his farewell letter, he said that the past nine years are like a decade where centuries have changed; the future depends on all parties making common choices around AGI and superintelligence. OpenAI has yet to announce who will take over this role.
