US Senators Give AI Giants an Ultimatum: Suspend Development, Otherwise Congress Will Take Action
Comparatively, according to AXIOS, US Senator Bernie Sanders urged the CEO of leading AI companies to suspend AI development, warning that lawmakers would step in if no action was taken. The letter was reportedly sent to OpenAI founder Sam Altman, Anthropic's Dario Amodei, and Zuckerberg.
Sanders said: At a time when we've seen humans get out of control and create potentially dangerous viruses, your company is still racing ahead — investing tens of billions of dollars in a technology that no one can fully understand, predict, or control.
As you can see, AI legislation, particularly efforts led by progressives like Sanders, is unlikely to receive enough support to become law in this Congress. What can be expected now are symbolic bills and public pressure actions — and if the Democratic Party takes back any house, there may be congressional investigations and subpoenas to hold tech CEOs to account.
