In one of the large-scale online dating investment fraud cases, an insurance practitioner in his fifties was tricked into investing in virtual currency by an online dating partner claiming to be a “car dealer”, and ended up losing over HK$26 million.

The police warned that investors should be wary of recommending investment projects after establishing relationships through social platforms, especially investment opportunities involving virtual currency, guaranteeing high returns, or requiring transactions through unfamiliar platforms, and never relax financial security precautions due to feelings or trust.
