Russia extends crypto mining ban, Moscow region ban will last until 2032

According to Twitter, Russia has extended restrictions on cryptocurrency mining to Moscow, Moscow Oblast, and parts of Kursk Oblast. The relevant ban will take effect on August 15, 2026, and continue until December 31, 2032. According to Russian Government Resolution No. 936, this new restricted area is mainly due to pressure on electricity supply. Russia has previously imposed similar mining restrictions in parts of the Republic of Buryatia and Trans-Baikal Krai. Russia's Moscow State Energy Department said that as demand for data centers and electricity grows, limiting power-intensive cryptocurrency mining activities will help ease the pressure on electricity supply. According to the data, there are currently 65 grid-connected data centers in Moscow and Moscow Oblast, with a total capacity of about 734 MW.

Dragonfly Partner: Today's AI boom might be difficult to emerge without the development of the crypto industry

Comparing news, Dragonfly partner Haseeb posted an article on the X platform saying that without the development of the crypto industry, today's AI boom might be difficult to emerge. He said that Bitcoin miners have accumulated experience in power acquisition, site selection, and large-scale infrastructure construction in remote regions over the past 10 years, providing an important foundation for the current expansion of AI data centers; at the same time, crypto mining requirements have also helped Nvidia complete the transformation from a gaming GPU manufacturer to an AI computing chip supplier. Furthermore, the core teams of many emerging AI cloud service providers such as CoreWeave, Crusoe, Together AI, and Nscale all have a background in the crypto industry.

Tennessee's Hawkins County passes ban on unstructured area crypto mining facilities and data center operations

Comparatively, Hawkins County Commissioners in Tennessee passed a ban with 12 votes in favor and 0 against, prohibiting the establishment, construction, installation, expansion, and operation of cryptographic mining facilities and data centers in unstructured areas of the county. The committee passed a similar ban in September 2025 to prevent digital asset company ExoticRidge from carrying out mining operations locally, and passed a resolution in January confirming its relevant authority. ExoticRidge and Hawkins County officials proposed a settlement in January that would allow the company to build and operate the facility with noise restrictions. The proposed provision requires that A-weighted decibels of noise at property boundaries must not be higher than 80 decibels for more than 30 minutes in any 4 hours. A law signed in April in Tennessee made it illegal to use and install cryptocurrency ATMs and self-service terminals starting July 1, and related restrictions on cases where residents use devices to transfer money to fraudsters.

BNEF: US data centers may use 20% of electricity in 2035, Bitcoin mining companies will accelerate the shift to AI computing power

Comparing news, Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF)'s latest forecast shows that by 2035, the electricity consumption of US data centers will account for about 20% of the country's total electricity consumption, a sharp increase from the current level of about 5.9%. The agency raised its 2035 data center power demand estimate to 106 GW, which is 36% higher than its forecast of 78 GW in April this year. Currently, the US data center has an operating capacity of about 40 GW, accounting for about 3.5%-4% of the country's electricity demand, and under the BNEF benchmark scenario, this share will reach 8.6% by 2035. The high growth model of the American Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) indicates that if the combined effects of cryptocurrency mining and AI computing power are taken into account, the upper limit of this ratio also points to 20%. Facing the explosive growth in demand for AI computing power, Bitcoin mining companies are actively transforming. Companies such as Core Scientific and Riot Platforms have partnered with tech giants such as AWS and Google to transform the original mine into an AI data center. Currently, Bitcoin mining companies have locked in about 6 GW of electricity capacity, which is expected to expand to 12 GW by 2027. Some analysts estimate that about 20% of the mining companies' computing power production capacity will shift to AI loads at that time. According to data from Texas power grid operator ERCOT, data centers already account for about 90% of local heavy applications, and a large number of sites originally used for crypto mining are being re-planned as AI computing power facilities. This trend is also directly reflected in the capital market. Core Scientific reached a partnership with AI cloud service provider CoreWeave after getting out of bankruptcy, and the stock price rebounded significantly.

The US SEC sued a $22 million crypto mining scam involving more than 380 investors

In comparison, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced that it has filed a lawsuit against Florida resident Zan Shaikh and his company Mining Automatic, alleging that it raised approximately $22 million from more than 380 investors through a false crypto asset mining investment program and suspected of misappropriating investors' funds. According to the SEC, between June 2023 and May 2025, the defendant promised that investors could obtain guaranteed monthly returns through crypto mining, but actually only about 13% of the funds raised were used for so-called mining operations. The remaining funds were mainly used for marketing, attracting new investors, and paying personal and other unrelated business expenses. According to the SEC, the defendant raised at least $20 million more than the amount already returned to investors. The SEC has charged it with allegedly violating anti-fraud and securities issuance regulations relating to the Securities Act of 1933 and the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. Both parties have agreed to accept a permanent ban after court approval. Subsequent returns of illegal proceeds, interest, and the amount of civil fines will be determined by the court.

To help customers make a smooth transition, the platform is negotiating with other pool operators such as Braiins and Luxor. The analysis points out that this move reflects the trend that large mining companies are gradually adjusting their business focus under Bitcoin price fluctuations and changes in the industry environment. Analysis: US chip production capacity may shift to consumer electronics and defense or will indirectly compress the supply capacity of cryptographic mining machines

Comparing news, KobeisSiletter's analysis indicates that Intel's stock price rose by about 9% in a single day after Trump announced the joint design and manufacture of chips in the US. This development is beneficial to the entire semiconductor industry at the policy level, and the market expects that investment in wafer manufacturing and advanced processes in the US will continue to receive support. However, for the crypto market, if US chip production capacity shifts more to consumer electronics and defense-related orders, it may indirectly compress ASIC mining machine supply capacity, thereby potentially affecting the mining hardware cycle. Therefore, Intel's production capacity dynamics are also viewed as a “substantial revaluation signal” of the Bitcoin and crypto mining markets.
