A Year in the Boca Parachain (2): System Chains, Smart Contracts, and Social Media

Over the past year, Boca's first parachains have been busy launching and upgrading technology, demonstrating the power and flexibility provided by Boca through the parachain model. The parachain model allows teams to fully customize their Layer-1 blockchain in a way that best suits their usage, and has industry-leading upgradability and interoperability capabilities to gain a competitive advantage.

Boca's parachain ecosystem shows Web3's potential to drive innovation across a wide range of usage scenarios, and is now active in DeFi, smart contracts, social media, decentralized identity, the Internet of Things, gaming, metaverse, and sustainability.

This series of articles provides a brief introduction to the parachain situation in the first year after Boca went live.Part 1 introduces Boca's DeFi (decentralized finance) parachainThis article continues to introduce Boca's system parachains, smart contracts, and social media parachains in the order they won parachain slot auctions.

Boca's system parachain

Boca's industry-leading on-chain governance system can allocate parachain slots to the blockchain, provide core services to the ecosystem, and generally uses DOT, Boca's native token rather than introducing its own token.

These “system parachains” are also known as “public service parachains” because they usually provide basic core functionality to the community on a non-profit basis, do not require a parachain slot auction process, and are managed by Boca's relay chain governance system. In “Parity is about to launch a “collective” parachain on Polkadot!” In this article, you can check out the latest roadmap for some of Boca's system parachains.

Statemint

Available on December 18, 2021

The ability to create and transfer assets is a basic requirement of the Boca ecosystem, so it makes sense to provide some basic asset functions as a core public service of the network.

StatemintIt is the first system parachain on Boca, which provides basic asset infrastructure. It allows any entity to deploy assets, including NFT assets, providing generic multi-asset functionality for a range of use cases, and using DOT as its native token.

Assets created on Statemint can be divided into three basic categories: assets supported by the functionality of an on-chain protocol (such as assets that grant voting rights or access to a network), assets with off-chain support (such as real-world assets such as off-chain reserves or art), and assets without support.

Collectives

Available November 19, 2022

One of the basic features required for Web3 is to enable people from all over the world to come together and organize as a group without trusting third parties like lawyers and courts.CollectivesIt is Boca's second system parachain, and it provides this functionality to the Boca ecosystem.

The first collective to launch on the Collectives parachain wasPolkadot Alliance, a community initiative to recognize positive contributions to the ecosystem and establish ethical guidelines around fraud, malicious behavior, misuse of the Boca brand, and unsourced code. PolkaDot FellowshipIt is the second collective to launch, a decentralized group of Boca technology experts, at BocaOpenGovIt plays a key role in (Boca Network's next-generation governance system).

Boca's smart contract parachain

The Boca ecosystem is paving the way for a truly interoperable Web3, and the scale of its smart contract options continues to expand. Boca currently has several smart contract quasi-domains, covering Ethereum-compatible (EVM) options, as well as native WebAssembly (Wasm) smart contracts for increased performance.

Smart contracts on Boca can be interconnected across chains, ending the era of isolated networks and forming the foundation for a cross-chain Web3 integrated interconnected ecosystem. Smart contract options on Boca have platforms that are specific to specific use cases, such as DeFi or commodities.

Moonbeam

Second Auction: Launched December 17, 2021

MoonbeamIt's a cross-chain smart contract platform that makes it easy to build multi-chain dapps on Boca using familiar Ethereum tools.

Traditionally, the siloed nature of the blockchain ecosystem requires that Ethereum smart contracts and dapps need to be modified or completely rewritten to run on different chains. However, as an EVM-based smart contract platform, Moonbeam enables users to establish or redeploy smart contracts to Boca without reconfiguration, and even expand its functionality through on-chain governance, staking, and cross-chain integration.

In less than a year since it went live, Moonbeam has reached 14.6 million transactions, 1.5 million unique addresses, more than 3,000 ERC-20 tokens, and integration with 9 other parachains through XCM, making it the most active network on Boca. More than 300 projects, integrations, and collaborations have been established within the Moonbeam ecosystem. Moonbeam was highlighted by Electric Capital as one of the fastest-growing blockchain ecosystems, with a 27% increase in full-time developers in 2022.

The Astar network has created more than 50 dapps on its platform and announced a partnership with Toyota and NTT Docomo, Japan's largest mobile phone network.

Phala

Auction 13: Launched March 11, 2022

PhalaIt is a next-generation decentralized cloud computing network that supports Web3. Its core is security, scalability, and cost efficiency, and aims to bring the decentralized computing cloud to the masses.

Users can buy computing power from node operators that provide resources to the network. By utilizing the Trusted Execution Environment (TEEs) within modern computer CPUs, node operators cannot see or tamper with data stored on their machines, thereby ensuring data privacy. Phala's Turing complete smart contract enhances the protection of management programs on the network, and is complemented by an off-chain programming model called the “Phat Contract,” a software for the Web3 backend. Phat Contract is inexpensive, has zero latency, provides privacy and serverless SDKs, and can maintain high-end computing across multiple services without congesting the blockchain.

In addition to Phat Contract, Phala also launched PhalaWorld in 2022, a digital experience showing the progress of users' soul-bound NFTs on the Phala network. In the year since launch, Phala has grown from a few hundred off-chain computing workers to nearly 20,000, running on 140,000 virtual CPUs.

Darwinia

Auction 21: Available August 28, 2022

Building interoperability between blockchains from scratch is a goal that many networks and solutions have been working to achieve, or at least have had this idea for quite some time.

DarwiniaIt is a cross-chain protocol and smart contract platform that aims to be the hub of a cross-ecosystem bridge on Boca, with a bridge connecting the Boca ecosystem to networks such as Ethereum and Cosmos. Darwinia provides a lightweight client-based general cross-chain message transmission infrastructure for decentralized applications.

Many cross-chain bridges aren't interoperable from the start, and are often a temporary solution to network congestion and high transaction costs. Using Substrate/Boca, Darwinia is inherently interoperable, bringing users trustless cross-chain token exchange, exchange, and marketplace functionality. Through the Darwina infrastructure, single-chain applications (DeFi, DEX, GameFi, etc.) can be upgraded to cross-chain versions to expand their functionality.

Boca's social media parachain

Perhaps the biggest success and failure of the Web2 era, social media is an industry dominated by a few tech giants. They control the acquisition of user data and information, have almost no responsibility or supervision, and turn users into products for their own financial gain. Web3 provides a unique opportunity to revolutionize social media and return control to users, and Boca Parachain is making several important advances in making this better future a reality.

frequency

Auction No. 33: Launched November 21, 2022

frequencyIt changed the Web2 model, which is a social media optimized parachain that gives users complete control over their data. As the first implementation of the Decentralized Social Networking Protocol (DSNP), Frequency provides a means to democratize and decentralize social media, providing tools for a new round of innovation in social networks. DSNP will allow users to switch between social media platforms at will while maintaining full control over their data and social relationships, so they won't lose their social graph as they move to a new network.

Frequency is designed to expand decentralized social networking applications, with low, predictable costs and no-currency interactions, and off-chain data broadcasting capabilities to maximize throughput and enhance openness and transparency.

Subsocial

Auction No. 37: Available February 13, 2023

Among the first projects to begin construction in Boca Ecology,Subsocialis a Web3 social media protocol and platform that enables developers to launch decentralized censorship-resistant social networks. Many social networks can run on the Subsocial chain, which provides shared networking standards. Users are free to post, create, and manage their own content without being influenced by third parties, have full control over their social profiles, and can even set their own content moderation preferences.

Using Substrate and IPFS (for storage), the platform invites developers to build social apps where user-generated content is owned by users, and data can be shared between applications. App creators on Subsocial can also eliminate the need for their users to interact with the token.

Subsocial has established several partnerships, collaborations, and integrations across the Boca ecosystem, including integration with data storage project Crust Network and Polkassembly, the Boca governance platform.

Kusama parachain

In addition to the current parachains on Boca, 43 parachains have joined Kusama, or Boca's Canary Network. Kusama is a place where outstanding builders innovate, providing teams with a real-time, valuable environment to test their technology and reduce risk, build communities, and develop partnerships before production is deployed to Boca, or build and iterate on more experimental use cases.

The current use cases on Kusama generally reflect those on Boca, but focus more on DAOs (decentralized autonomous organizations) and artificial intelligence.

Many teams maintain a parachain each on Boca and Kusama, and use Kusama to test the new technology in action before rolling out upgrades to their Boca mainnet.

What are your next plans?

Although 2022 was a tough year for blockchain, the Boca community and ecosystem achieved several key innovations over the past year, and now has the largest layer-1 chain ecosystem, more than 300 decentralized applications already built on it, and the largest community of full-time developers outside of Ethereum.

As a number of new projects are launched, new parachains will continue to be launched next year and beyond, while existing parachains will continue to build on their recent successes, launch new technologies and bring in a new wave of Web3 end users.

Several of Boca's key technologies are also under development, which will further boost parachain and dapp capabilities, including along withXCM v3withBridge Hub ParachainThe launch will enable trustless interoperability with external networks. As the Boca ecosystem continues to grow, 2023 will be the most important year for Web3 innovation.
