Web3 clip at the gaming event GDC: Reflections on economic models, transformation of traditional game vendors

As officially stated, there is only one way to describe this year's conference: “GDC is back.” And for such a grand event with the theme of “The Future of Gaming,” blockchain games are of course essential. The Game Developers Conference 2023 (GDC 2023), the annual game industry event, was held in San Francisco, USA from March 20-24. According to official GDC data released on March 29, GDC 2023 attracted more than 28,000 participants, totaling more than 1,000 speakers and 700 conferences, seminars, and round tables. You should know that due to the pandemic, the GDC conference has been cancelled for two consecutive sessions, and it seems that it is no longer popular even after recovering in 2022. Only 12,000 people attended, which is far from the 27,000 participants at the unprecedented GDC 2019. As officially stated, there is only one way to describe this year's conference: “GDC is back.” The core of GDC is an annual main stage presentation. This year's theme is “The Future of Gaming,” which coincides with the concept of blockchain games that have only recently entered the public eye and are booming. At GDC 2023, there are more than 20 conferences dedicated to blockchain games. Organizers include Web3 unicorns Polygon and Immutable, as well as traditional gaming giants that have transformed and developed Web3 games, such as Wand Nexon. Other participating projects include cryptographic infrastructure such as Avalanche, Boba Network, Chainlink, and Cronos, as well as Web3 game development teams such as Createra. Overall, the chain game circuit was quite lively during the conference. A number of companies joined forces to announce strategic cooperation, and game publishers that have successfully transformed Web3 shared their experiences in building games and platforms. This article will introduce some noteworthy information during GDC 2023. A number of leading institutions have joined forces to establish cooperation. According to Delphi Digital's report, Ethereum's layer 2 scaling solution Immutable X and Polygon's gaming ecosystem both received a cumulative investment of nearly 900 million US dollars in 2022, making them veritable leaders in the chain game circuit. Just as GDC opened, Polygon Labs and Immutable X parent company Immutable first released big news. The two sides announced a strategic partnership to accelerate the development of Web3 games and will work together to create Immutable zkEVM, an EVM-compatible zk-rollup scaling solution built on Polygon's zero-knowledge technology. It is worth mentioning that on the day I made this announcement, Immutable also announced two utility upgrades to IMX: 20% of the platform fee must be paid with IMX; IMX will be used as the core gas currency of Immutable zkEVM and become the native network token. Polygon has also set its sights on Asia, supporting South Korean gaming giant Nexon's entry into the blockchain industry. On the second day of the GDC conference, Nexon announced that it is creating a Web3 game called “MapleStory Universe” and will receive a “dedicated application chain” for the game via Polygon Supernet. “MapleStory Universe” is based on Nexon's 2D horizontal scroll online game “MapleStory” (Maple Valley, also known as “Adventure Island”), launched in 2003. The latter has been popular for nearly 20 years and has generated more than 4 billion US dollars in revenue so far, and has accumulated over 180 million registered users. The MapleStory Universe development team said in a statement that they will work closely with the Polygon Labs team to develop and market this new game. Although no further strategic cooperation was reached, Polygon Labs also joined the GDC conference with South Korean gaming giant NEOWIZ to promote the innovative Web3 game platform developed by the latter...

YGG partners with Metalcore, an open-world multiplayer combat action game

YGG partners with Metalcore, an open-world multiplayer combat action game

Yield Guild Games (YGG) has partnered with MetalCore, an NFT game based on mechanized combat. The game is set on a chaotic planet where players fight for their own faction, using war machines, vehicles, and weapons for large-scale PVP battles, cooperative PVE battles, and faction-based open world battles. The game was designed by gaming industry veteran Studio 369 and blockchain developer Umbrella Network, and the development team worked on projects such as TV, Disney, Lucasfilm, “Battle for Midway,” “Mechfighter 2,” “Mortal Kombat,” and “Gears of War.” The team also includes Hugo Award winner and conceptual artist Stephan Martiniere, who has worked on projects such as “Magic Gathering,” “Fallout,” “The Elder Scrolls,” “God of War,” and “Sky.” YGG purchased $250,000 worth of MetalCore governance tokens and $250,000 worth of NFTs, including: pilots, tanks, planes, and mechs; and the exclusive YGG-branded baron skin. As a result of this partnership, YGG also received exclusive land sales, Genesis miners, and private Alpha testing opportunities, which can be used by the YGG community. Sam Kim, senior advisor at MetalCore, said, “MetalCore is designed and built for multiplayer battles based on factions or guilds. Players join a baron or guild to play together, win together, and earn together. Therefore, we are excited to join YGG and participate in the next development of blockchain games and guilds.” This massively multiplayer online game (MMO) combines high-quality traditional gaming with blockchain technology to allow players to buy, sell, rent, and trade their assets outside of the gaming ecosystem. MetalCore has different game modes such as player-versus-player (PVP), player-versus-environment (PVE), battle royale, turn-based strategy, and real-time strategy. There's also a free-to-play mode where players need to upgrade their account levels to earn tokens, while users who have purchased mecha NFTs will be able to earn money directly from the game. Players can become metal barons from three opposing factions and fight against each other in an open world environment. The game's main upgrade mechanism includes blueprints for collecting, merging, and creating war machines and vehicles. Land, garages, gears, and pilots are all NFTs, so players can sell their vehicles, rent their war machines to others, or collect fees on land owned by the faction they've joined. Weapons, pilots, mech outfits, and skins can all be traded on the open market. Players can earn the in-game token $FAB by playing various game modes to customize vehicles, including airplanes, gunboats, fighter planes, and bombers. MetalCore will launch in Q3 2022. 50v50 PvP access and open world games are planned for the fourth quarter of 2022. Want to know more about YGG? Go to our Discord server and join the guild!
